Price Cao sponsors Pies and Ales at The Hutong

We knew the team from Price Cao Lawyers were smart, but when they requested to host a pies and ales night at The Hutong, we quickly realized that they had good taste too! On Saturday evening we opened up our little red hutong doors to entertain guests with home-cooked Aussie goodness from Two Guys and a Pie and ales from the Dxcel and Vandergeeten. As projected, pies and ales proved a winning combination, and the only request was for another event in the future!

A Truly International Team-Building Experience

The Hutong proudly hosted a group of professionals from all over the world for a truly international team building program. Hailing from India, Singapore, China, the United States, Germany, Japan, Korea, Italy and Australia–this team first tackled a Chinese Market by diving elbow-deep into tofu, seasonal vegetables and pickled garlic to gain a better understanding of the foundations of Chinese cooking. Next up, the team meandered through the hutongs and found themselves competing in an internationally-inspired Hook n Cook competition. Teams of two created everything from Thai Curry Chicken to Apple Crumble, which culminated in a roof-top feast complete with a locally-made beer from Great Leap Brewery.

Cowan’s Creativity Shines at The Hutong

Families come out of their ‘Shell’ at The Hutong

The Hutong was thrilled to work with Outpost Beijing to create an afternoon of family-friendly activities to welcome the newest additions to Shell’s Beijing team. Guests arrived at 10am for a market tour, where Chefs Sophia and Vivienne guided families through the basics of stocking a Chinese kitchen. It was no easy task to navigate a market equipped with strollers and little ones, but everyone made it through with a smile on their face. Next up, eager participants were split into four activity groups; big kids made hand-pulled noodles in the tea room, little kids were entertained by our Hutong babysitters and the really big kids (adults) participated in a Qi Gong/Traditional Chinese Medicine Workshop in the main room with Alex or tested their cooking skills in the kitchen. To finish up the afternoon, everyone feasted on a gourmet buffet in the main room, most of which they made themselves. Most were shocked that the dishes turned out so great, and requested the recipes to make at home!

We were lucky to have planned the event on a nice sunny day, and photographer Liz Phung took an awesome group photo on the roof to commemorate the experience!

Total may be masters of customer service…but what about tea service?

For this event, tea expert Mark Thirwall first took the Total team on a metaphorical tea journey through some of China’s most enchanting tea-growing areas. From the tea farms in Xishuangbanna to Wuyi Shan, Mark introduced little-known secrets to how China has maintained its reputation for growing the best teas in the world. After being quizzed on their newly gained knowledge, a few brave executives took a leap of faith and sat behind their own Chinese tea set to compete in The Hutong’s Interactive Tea Challenge. Gaining points for style, presentation and overall performance, the Total team delighted co-workers with their uncanny ability to ‘infuse’ their own personalities into a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Winners, as judged by their peers, received prizes from infused tea balls to bamboo chopsticks…and the only complaint was that they couldn’t stay longer to sip more cha!

Wokai Launches Version 3.0 in the Tea Room

The Hutong was proud to host Wokai in our Tea Room last week for the launch of Wokai 3.0. We’re not exactly sure how this incredible micro-finance social enterprise could get any more awesome…but their sweatshirts were certainly a start. Casey and her team rented our Tea Room out for the day and had a great time playing around with our extensive range of Chinese tea ware, sampling Hutong-inspired snacks and hosting a visioning session for the upcoming year.

Schlumberger knows how to do Business Lunch!

Prompt and ready for action, the Schlumberger team arrived at The Hutong ready to cook for their lunch-time Hook n Cook event. This team skillfully maneuvered their way through a culinary quiz, auction for ingredients, recipe navigation, plating and dish presentations. Schlumberger took the art of Hook n Cook plating to a whole new level, just check out the winning Moroccon fish dish below! Just like they arrive, this group finished right on time and headed back to the office for a bit more work. What diligence!

Williams Lea Delights in Contemporary Chinese Cuisine

The Hutong was pleased to welcome translators from Williams Lea for their first event, a Contemporary Chinese Private Chef’s Table with Chef Sue. Focusing not only on unique flavors but incredible presentation, Chef Sue revealed culinary delights such as lotus-leaf steamed drum sticks with a mandala-influenced circular presentation, Sichuan-style Scotch eggs on a bed of fried vermicelli, deep-fried lemon chicken plated to perfection, and a coconut-mango sago pudding to put a sweet end to the meal. All dishes were paired with our Australian and South African wines; a perfect compliment to an incredible feast. Williams Lea was so impressed that they are already talking about plans for their next event with us!

Bayer Tries their Hand at Fusion Dumplings

Fei Fang was a little hesitant at first when we suggested a dumpling-making party for her team of Chinese and German colleagues. She was worried the task would be too simple and cliché for her Chinese co-workers. Fortunately, at The Hutong we specialize in putting a creative twist on everything, and Fei and her group were anything but bored creating colorful dumpling skins with fillings like potato and cheese, vegetarian surprise and our personal favorite, banana and chocolate dessert supreme! Master Chef Sophia also whipped up some traditional Chinese stir-fry dishes, which pleased palettes and stomachs alike! Thanks Bayer, for being such big supporters and lively participants in numerous events at The Hutong.

Arreon Trades In Carbon Credits for Woks

They may be experts in carbon credit trading, but many Arreon employees were not quite as comfortable in the kitchen! However, with support from their co-workers and a little elbow grease, the Arreon team cooked their way to culinary excellence. With wine flowing, this team learned a little bit about cooking and a lot about having fun! Oh, and did we mention that the CEO won the competition? We promise the event wasn’t rigged, he created an incredible fish dish from scratch!
